Staying Healthy - Mind, Body, & Soul Part-2

Part-2 The Body

Here is Part 2 of 3 on Staying Healthy.

“Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity.” - John F. Kennedy

If you want to be a great artist or just great at everything and anything you do in life, you need to be healthy. By keeping your Mind clear, your Body in shape/well nourished, and your Soul free of bad vibes/negativity, you will allow yourself to succeed in life.

Think of yourself like the engine of a car (every once in a while you need to have repairs done), by taking care of these three things, you will allow yourself to perform at a high level and your body will be able to fire on all cylinders.

I have found that living a healthy lifestyle (eating well, working out, taking breaks away from art and enjoying life) makes me a better artist. Life is all about balance.

There are as many nights as days, and the one is just as long as the other in the year's course. Even a happy life cannot be without a measure of darkness, and the word 'happy' would lose its meaning if it were not balanced by sadness.
~ Carl Jung

Working On The Body

About two years ago I started making small changes in my day-to-day life. Small changes eventually work their way up to being big changes. It all starts with baby steps. We all live busy lives and changing or doing something out of the norm., can seem like such a giant task.

Let me back track a bit. As long as I can remember, I've never been one for working out (still to this day, I don't like going to the gym). I always thought it was a waste of time and that I could be doing or working on something of higher importance.

I use to play high school hockey and we had to hit the gym, to make ourselves stronger than our competition. I hated this then and as you know from above, I still do. In the off-season, I joined the cross country track team and quit after the first practice. Why you ask? Yup, you guessed it, because they wanted us to "hit the weights"! Seriously?? Lift weights for track? I knew right then and there that track was not for me!

I carried this mentality with me after high school and essentially the rest of my life till about a couple of years ago. My mind set was, the gym = meat head and I personally didn't care about being "jacked". I've always been athletic, playing hockey, basketball, soccer, ultimate frisbee, wiffel ball, bocce ball... Bocce ball is athletic right??

Fast forward to a few years ago. I was listening to a podcast and later on speaking with a few friends and they were both saying the same thing.

Working out doesn't mean getting "huge" "ripped" "jacked" or having muscles upon muscles??? Boy was I wrong! It's about being healthy and keeping your body performing at maximum capacity. If you're body running well, your mind will run well, and you will be able to produce more quality art!

* Remember, you don't have to work out to have a six pack, working out = staying heart healthy!

Excuses

Believe me I know them all- it's too hot, I can't afford the gym, I am sore, I am tired, it's a holiday, etc. Have you seen the video about the couple talking about working out?? It's hilarious because it's true.

Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2JSWgkwRL4

The point this is making is nobody really wants to do it, but if you can make it a routine and think about creating art after you are finished as your reward, it won't seem too bad.  Start slow and make small goals and each day or every other day, add on a few more reps each time.
I am currently up 50 sit-ups a day. I started at 0 because the only way I could do them was with the couch holding my feet down (using it as leverage). I know I remember a friend doing this in elementary school gym class too! * Now I can do them all by myself- like a big kid! :)
Here are some items I recommend buying if you are thinking of working out at home. I bought some kettlebells and a kettlebell video to help with some exercises. I personal love under armour gear and it helps reduce the sweat when working out while keeping me cool.

Eating Right

It's easy to eat every meal of the day via fast food places and restaurants. Who doesn't love getting a donut or cheeseburger every now and again? I am sure there are many people. (There is always an exception.) Either way, it's worth taking the time every day or every week to make meals at home instead of eating out- plus you will save lots of money doing this too! I'm sure your thinking oh yah right, I'm not going all vegan or vegetarian, I need my meat, I need my beer! I hear you loud and clear and I am the same way... All I am saying is think about the choices you make and cut back on some of the drinking (if you are drinking everyday, you know it's too much). Remember it's all about balance in life.

I try to eat really good during the week and some times 6 days a week and have one or two cheat days, because like I said, I like my beers, meat, chocolate, and ice cream too! This is the kind of diet where you can have your cake and eat it! I am on the whatever I want diet. I eat whatever I want once or twice a week. Nothing in excess is ever good.

Why Should I Care About My Health?

I am going to keep this short. You only have one body and one life. If you aren't working out and not eating healthy, I doubt you will be creating any art. Besides, does anyone really want to be sick or feeling so bad you don't want to create art? I sure as hell don't!

Now, get off that couch, step away from the computer! Clean out your fridge, buy some weights (gym memberships can be costly) and get to work on helping your body (your minds engine) fire on all cylinders. Once you do that, go create some art!

Best of luck to everyone on your path to a better you! I can't wait to hear from you and see how this helps you become a better artist. To quote What About Bob, "It's all about Baby Steps".

Staying Healthy - Mind, Body, & Soul Part-1

Part-1 The Mind

Staying Healthy is vital to the success of being great at anything and everything you do. I feel that being healthy is so important and is a pivotal link between happy and unhappy people. A topic of this magnitude cannot be answered in one blog post therefore I will be breaking this up into three sections- Mind, Body, & Soul.

If you want to be a great artist or great at everything and anything you do in life, you need to be healthy. By keeping your Mind clear, your Body in shape/well nourished, and your Soul free of bad vibes/negativity. By doing so,  you will allow yourself  the opportunity to succeed in life.

Wise man that Robert Fulghum is.

For a good read, check out Mr. Fulghum's Book "All I Really Need to Know I learned in Kindergarten" here:

Keeping My Mind Right

About two years ago I started making small changes in my day-to-day life. Small changes eventually work their way up to being big changes. It all starts with baby steps. We all live busy lives and changing or doing something seems like such a giant task. If I were to say I wanted to create 52 or more drawings every year, I probably would try and then loose focus and never finish that goal.  That is why I started a One A week Art Project- inspired by the TwinGeekz Art Project.

Every week I have one goal, to create and post a piece of art for my One A week Art Project which is due on Sunday or in some rare cases Monday. :) This small incremental deadline keeps me focused each week to create something new every week. Thus, at the end of 52 weeks, I have 52 pieces of new art!

Like I said above, We all live busy lives- Really. Busy. Lives. But that's no excuse to avoid doing what you love and staying healthy.

Taking Breaks

I don't know about you but I love being in my studio... I LOVE IT! I love being so isolated from everything in the world so that I can allow my mind to expand, get lost, and create masterpiece after masterpiece... or at least try! :)

That said, even I know when to take a break!

"Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once and a while, you could miss it."
--  Ferris Bueller (Ferris Bueller's Day Off)

Did I mention that I was a movie buff? Because I am and you will find me quoting a few movies every now and again. Have you ever seen Ferris Bueller's Day Off? If you haven't, it's a classic and I highly recommend it!

Aside from watching movies you can:

  • Go for a walk, hike, bike or run
  • Read a book
  • Play a game
  • Go to the beach
  • Hang out with friends or family
  • Meditate (I would like to start doing this)
  • Take a nap(I would also like to start doing this)

and the list goes on.

Can you think of any others? Leave a comment with things or ideas you do when taking a break from your routine.

Here are a few books to help expand your mind.

How do you make time to create art?

There is no beating around the bush, WE ARE ALL BUSY and we all live very busy lives.  How does one make time to create art?

Ask anyone (artists included) and they will tell you, it's no easy task juggling what life throws at you: spending time with friends and family, paying bills, working multiple jobs to get by, enjoying life and oh ya- creating art. Unless you are a full time artist, (I wish I was) you are more than likely working another job to support you passion. A "hobby to some" and a way-of-life to others! For me it's a way of life.

This drawing "Ultimate Froggie" is from week 17- you can view it here.

No matter how you do it, it's not easy. You have to set aside time for yourself to be locked down in the studio and create. Life is about balance and it always will be. It's about give and take - the ebb and flow of life. I know that if I don't create something at least once a week - I WILL GO OUT OF MY MIND!!! For the most part, I am creating everyday. Whether I am creating a drawing, a painting, taking photos (wickednewenglandphotography.com) or designing something on the computer.... I am creating- And I am loving every minute of it!!

For the past two years I have been posting pieces of art for my One A Week Art Project where I display one creation in any medium on my blog. It's been a great outlet for me and has given me another reason to finish a project I started. Having a deadline gives me a little push to keep going. The deadline keeps me inspired to keep at it, especially on the days when I am feeling under the weather or less inclined to create and oh yeah- when I am feeling lethargic from doing too many things.

I recommend getting a calendar and circling the days each week that you will take for yourself and create art. You can buy a calendar here: At-A-Glance Recycled Monthly Wall Calendar - Blue/Red - 20" x 30" (Google Affiliate Ad)

The calendar will provide you with a concrete, visual deadline. I also recommend writing it in Pen or Permanent Marker. It's easy to erase pencil and yes, of course you can scribble or cross out your notes that you wrote in pen. However, every time you see that scribbled out a note, you will be reminded of the day you didn't create art- even though you intended to.

"The best thing I've done in a while was starting my One A Week Art Project. By doing this, I have created a concrete deadline and a goal to create one piece of art (I usually end up creating more) each week and post it on my blog. This deadline has really helped me grow as an artist."

If you are struggling with this issue of finding the time to create, I can sympathize. Start out slow by taking 15 or 20 minutes a day and set aside some art time. Take small baby steps towards a long and fulfilling journey by working up to an hour a week and eventually an hour a day (or whatever your schedule will allow).

Making A List

Another way to allot your time is by making a list.

Make two lists:
  1. *All the things you Need to do
  2. *All the things you Want to do
*include a tentative time frame (soft date) and a definitive time frame (hard date) for when you would like to and have to accomplish or full fill each item on the list.

By writing down all the things you need to do each Day, Week, and Month- you will allow yourself to focus on what's important from day to day. This visual reminder will allow you to focus on the immediate task at hand and not worry about everything you need to get done.

Keep in mind that your weeks will vary depending upon personal obligations. This is natural as you must keep balance in your life.... it all comes back to balance.

iPhone & Mobile Phone Calendar Apps

Your phone is always with you and while they are installed with a default calendar, there are some pretty cool apps available that make life even easier.

Here's a free app that I just read about here called Sunrise. (I have never used this app.)

Another app (that I have used) is called Evernote.

Have you ever written something down so you don't forget it later on and then lose that paper? I think everyone has... I just lost three (3) of them while writing this post. Anyway, Evernote allows you to take notes, photo notes and more. The best part is that you can access Evernote via your phone, computer or tablet. You can even share them with a friend.

They have a Free version and a Paid version. The app download is free and it works great!

Final Words

Try not to get too overwhelmed with prioritizing ever detail of your life. There is something to be said for allowing a little bit of spontaneity into your life. *I'm not talking about "How are you going to eat your next meal spontaneity"-more like- "Hey, it's sunny outside, lets go to the beach and leave the laundry for later".

Remember baby steps- Start small and go slow. Speed will be acquired over the long haul. This journey you are on is long and there is no need to rush it. Small changes now, will be Big changes in the future.

If you have any questions for me and need some advice, you can send me an email and I will do my best to help you out.

Feel free to post in the comments section and let me and other artists know how you make time to create art. Any personal tips or tricks that could be helpful to others.
